Dr Zakir Hussain Park in Ranchi
Description
Dr. Zakir Hussain Park is a public garden located at 98HC+Q5G, Ranchi University, Morabadi, Ranchi, Jharkhand 834001, near Ranchi University and Raj Bhavan.
Established in 1969 and named after India's third President, Dr. Zakir Hussain, the park was initially a recreational spot but fell into neglect with crumbling infrastructure until its major renovation by the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) in 2001. Post-renovation, it featured children's swings, a toy train, a small zoo with rabbits and guinea pigs, a central banyan tree with benches, a jogging path, and refreshment stalls, attracting 100-150 daily visitors (up to 250 on weekends).
By 2013, it closed for about 8 years due to poor maintenance. In 2021, RMC and partners like Ranchi Smart City and World Resources Institute revived it in a rapid 72-75 hour project under Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, adding children's play areas, walking lanes, a spice and herb garden, improved lighting for evening visits, and reopening it to the public.
Today, it remains open (typically 10:00 AM to 7:50 PM, though hours may vary), rated 3.6/5 from around 695 Google reviews, popular for morning/evening walks, mood refreshment, and family time (average stay: 30 minutes). Visitors note its serene greenery and trails but mention no internal food stalls—bring from nearby markets. No recent 2026 news indicates ongoing issues; it continues as a local green space opposite Raj Bhavan.
